Marine & Maritime
Online
16 Feb - 16 April 2025
An online exhibition showcasing works from our entire membership.
President’s foreword
This is my last close involvement with the Online Format as I exit my Presidency of ASMA, I was well pleased to have our society viewed by a quality international Marine Artist in Nick Raposo as many of our crew are worthy of international attention.
- Julian Bruere, outgoing ASMA President 2025
Welcome to the Society of |Marine Artist’s Online Exhibition. Our members have a passion for all things marine and a need to express themselves with visual media. As you will see, this is ably illustrated in the catalogue of images which follow. The images are a true cross-section of the work of the Society; from Fellows, through Exhibiting members to those emerging artists all of whom contribute to the work of the Society and our aim: to explore what it is to be ‘marine’. I wish to thank and congratulate all the exhibitors, the Committee, especially the Secretary Sarah Philips who put this together and, of course the outgoing President, Julian Bruere, whose idea it was. Gratitude is also due to you, the viewer, for taking the time to peruse, consider and evaluate the artwork. Without an audience, exhibitions are meaningless.
As a final comment, if you are keen on anything marine and dabble in a bit of artwork, it may be a time to give ASMA a go.
Enjoy the exhibition. With many thanks
- Don Fogg, incoming ASMS President 2025
For this exhibition some members opted to provide statements regarding their work- these begin on page 23 of the catalogue, which is visible here.
If you would like to enquire after the purchase of an artwork, please contact the Secretary at asma.secretary.contact@gmail.com
Awards - by guest judge Nick Raposo
Fellows:
Winner: John Woodland: Tooronga and Changte evoked in me everything I like to see in a marine painting—mastery of the medium and the subject. Stunning work.
Commendation: Janette Sindel-Hand’s painting A Classic Lady captures the excitement of sailing, the feeling of joy evident in the subjects.
Commendation: My first reaction to Jeff Rigby’s painting is that I wanted to see it on my wall, which says something. His management of atmosphere and aerial perspective is outstanding.
Exhibiting Members:
Winner: Rick Crossland’s Franklin Dock, Afternoon demonstrates great brushwork and understanding of warm and cool, light and shadow. Good show!
Commendation: Carole Elliott’s Yachting #5 is a great exercise in close observation and mastery of form and medium. Excellent pastel work.
Commendation: Paul McKenzie’s painting, In Their Hearts… captured my eye for its obvious love for, and dedication to, the historical subject.
Standard Members:
Exhibiting membership has been awarded to Peter Warner, Ellen Macmahon, and Robert Sargent by the Committee, based on the merit of their submissions. Congratulations!
