Awards
Best in Show
After much deliberation, I have decided to award Best in Show to Julian Bruere for his painting Captain Portlock Greeting the Dawn.
I admired this work’s technical skill and strong compositional quality. The juxtaposition of the swirling, surging sea; full of texture and movement, contrasts strongly with the softer, warmer haze of the sky and headland in the background, conveying a sense of drama, energy and intrigue. The scene is punctuated by a ship which has survived the storm and is destined for a brighter future.
Highly Commended
Jane Millington Good Things Do Happen
Millington’s ability to render water, especially in the foreground of this seascape, is impressive. There is a quiet stillness to this almost monochromatic painting, and I particularly admire the way the artist relies solely on the beauty and grandeur of the natural world to convey a sense of hope and optimism.
Robert Carter Pamir Port Vic
The skilled draftsmanship in the work is clear. Carter’s ability to build up many layers of paint to capture the warmth of sunlight on his subject once again conveys a great sense of optimism. This is particularly evident in the strong highlights on the ship’s sails and warm hues in the softly rendered sky, which contrast heavily with the vastness of the choppy sea, painted in deep blues, greens and teals.
